Hiyori is a "living" or half-ayakashi, a condition that is basically the result of trying to save a god's life (THANKS A LOT, YATO!). She sometimes "drops her body", aka astral projects. While in spirit form, Hiyori looks exactly the same, but with a purplish catlike tail. This cord is what keeps her connected to her body, keeping her alive.

Most people can't see, touch, hear, or communicate with her while she's outside of her body, but there are exceptions to this rule:

-gods, shinki, other spirits, generally anyone who has a connection to the afterlife or supernatural

-children and animals

-people who have a sixth sense when it comes to spirits, etc.

Hiyori can also sense and see (and smell) characters who might otherwise be invisible to others, including gods and other spirits. This ability is actually in her blood, inherited through her mother's bloodline.
